Ground Conditions: End of September and well into autumn. It has been a very hot summer, with serious fires in the Cairngorms centered around the area of Bynach More. Now, after some rain the ground is not as dry and there have been reports of the rivers being hard to cross. [September 2026]

Geal-charn is situated west of the A9, directly above Balsporran Cottages. A well-maintained track ascends from the valley floor, offering excellent walking conditions. This circular route ascends via the main ridge and returns through the valley on established paths.

The route begins at Balsporran Cottage. Ample parking is available in the large layby just off the A9.

Section 1: Up to the summit of Geal-Charn
Distance: 3.5 kms. | Ascent: 480 m. | Estimated Time: 2 hrs. 0 min.
From the parking area, follow the track past Balsporran Cottages toward the railway level crossing. Please exercise extreme caution when crossing the railway line. Once across, continue along the valley track. Ignore the first path junction leading up Allt Beul an Sporran, taking the second track that leads directly up the hillside.

Follow this well-defined track uphill until reaching a wooden post. From this point, the path becomes less distinct, but the route follows the crest of the ridge. As you approach the top, the slope flattens before rising again toward the true summit. Continue past the first cairn, which initially appears to be the highest point—to reach the main summit cairn.

Section 2: Back down by the valley track
Distance: 5 kms. | Ascent: 0 m. | Estimated Time: 1 hrs. 30 min.
Descend steeply south from the summit across stony terrain along the south ridge, which offers expansive views toward Loch Ericht and Ben Alder. Lower down near the col, the rocky ground gives way to vegetation, and a prominent valley path becomes visible in clear weather. Upon reaching this path, turn left and follow it back down the valley. The track leads directly back to the starting point near the A9.

28 May 2021 A nice bright late spring day. Walked this route but the other way around. Once at the top of the pass the view over to Ben Alder and Loch Ericht is one of the best in Scotland. Still lots of snow on the high Cairngorms as seen from the summit. Very busy in the car park.
